A 58-year-old man from Mount Vernon has been accused with killing his niece in the Bronx. According to investigators, the crime was caused by a family conflict about a home’s succession.

Police identified the suspect as Michael Foster, who was arrested on Wednesday evening and charged with murder, manslaughter, and 10 counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

The victim, 39-year-old Julia Anderson, was shot twice in the chest shortly after midnight on Tuesday while sitting inside her Jeep Grand Cherokee on Murdock Avenue in the Wakefield neighborhood of the Bronx.

According to investigators, gunfire was directed through the passenger-side window while Anderson was believed to be seated behind the wheel. Two shell casings were recovered at the scene. She was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities believe the shooting was linked to a family disagreement over the inheritance of a house, although further details about the dispute have not been disclosed.

Anderson’s family described her as a dedicated caregiver who worked with people with developmental disabilities. She had reportedly just finished her overnight shift at a group home in Wakefield and was driving home to Mount Vernon, less than a mile away, when she was attacked.

Her mother, Beverly Patterson, said she became worried when her daughter failed to arrive home at her usual time.

Friends, neighbors, and coworkers remembered Anderson as a compassionate and hardworking woman whose life was devoted to helping others. Her family said she was just one month away from celebrating her 40th birthday.
