Veteran American actor Vincent Pastore, celebrated for his unforgettable portrayal of Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in HBO’s The Sopranos, has died at the age of 80.

Pastore was found inside his home on City Island in the Bronx on Saturday after friends and colleagues had reportedly been unable to reach him for several days. Authorities said there were no signs of criminal activity, while an official cause of death had not been publicly announced.

His death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment world, particularly among fans and former cast members of the award-winning crime drama that made him a household name.

Pastore appeared in about 30 episodes as Tony Soprano’s longtime friend who secretly became an FBI informant. Although his character met a dramatic end during the second season, he later returned for several memorable appearances throughout the series.

Away from The Sopranos, Pastore built an impressive acting career spanning nearly four decades. His film credits included Goodfellas, Awakenings, Carlito’s Way, Gotti and The Jerky Boys: The Movie. He also appeared in television productions including Law & Order, Blue Bloods, General Hospital, Hawaii Five-0 and Celebrity Apprentice.

Michael Imperioli, who played Christopher Moltisanti in The Sopranos, remembered Pastore as a kind-hearted friend who cared deeply for those around him. Pastore’s longtime managers also praised his generosity, loyalty and willingness to support young actors and charitable causes.

Born in the Bronx, Pastore served in the US Navy before entering the entertainment industry. He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore.
