POLITICAL U-TURN: Attorney-General Drops Bid to Block Sedina Tamakloe’s Freedom at Appeal Court, Takes Same Battle to Supreme Court

Ghana’s high-profile MASLOC legal battle has taken another dramatic political turn after the Attorney-General withdrew an application seeking to prevent former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu from benefiting from her acquittal, only to move the same legal fight to the Supreme Court.

The Attorney-General’s office formally withdrew its stay-of-execution application before the Court of Appeal on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Principal State Attorney Hilda Craig informed the court that a notice of withdrawal had been filed on August 10, leading the three-member panel to strike out the application as withdrawn.

But the withdrawal did not signal the end of the government’s legal challenge.

Instead, the Attorney-General filed a fresh application for stay of execution at the Supreme Court, seeking to prevent the Court of Appeal’s decision acquitting and discharging Tamakloe-Attionu from taking full effect while the State pursues its appeal.

The latest maneuver is likely to intensify political debate surrounding a case that has already attracted significant public attention.

Tamakloe-Attionu had been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted on multiple charges connected to her tenure at MASLOC. However, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction in July 2026, concluding that the prosecution had failed to establish several of the charges beyond reasonable doubt and finding that the trial court had improperly shifted the burden of proof.

Following that decision, the Attorney-General quickly signaled the State’s dissatisfaction by filing an appeal at the Supreme Court and initially seeking a stay at the Court of Appeal.

The withdrawal of that application and its subsequent filing at Ghana’s highest court now raises the political temperature around the case, with both supporters and critics of the government expected to scrutinize the Attorney-General’s next move.

Meanwhile, following the withdrawal at the Court of Appeal, a release warrant for Tamakloe-Attionu was signed, clearing the immediate legal path for her release.

With the matter now heading firmly toward the Supreme Court, the courtroom battle over the former MASLOC boss is far from over and its legal and political consequences could continue to dominate Ghana’s public conversation.
