A devastating road accident at Ofankor Barrier in Accra has claimed at least 11 lives and left 13 others injured, turning the busy N6 highway into a scene of tragedy and emergency rescue operations on Thursday morning.
The deadly crash occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, on the express lane of the N6 highway, with the vehicles travelling from the Pokuase direction toward Achimota.
According to reports citing the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the collision involved multiple vehicles, including two tipper trucks, a minibus and a tricycle popularly known as “aboboyaa.” The impact badly mangled the minibus and left several passengers trapped inside the wreckage.
Emergency responders from the GNFS and Ghana Police Service rushed to the scene as rescuers desperately worked to free victims from the twisted vehicle. By about 8:45 a.m., fire officers had managed to extricate all those trapped inside the damaged minibus.
Initial reports put the death toll lower, but officials later confirmed that the number had climbed to 11, while 13 injured victims were transported to hospitals, including the 37 Military Hospital, Achimota Hospital and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, for medical attention.
One female survivor reportedly suffered severe injuries to her legs and was among those evacuated by ambulance as emergency personnel continued rescue and recovery efforts.
The horrific collision also caused major traffic congestion along the Ofankor corridor during the morning rush. Police redirected motorists onto the outer service lane while emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and secure the area.
Motorists approaching Ofankor from Pokuase and Amasaman were urged to slow down, exercise extreme caution and give emergency responders enough space to operate.
As of Thursday morning, authorities had not publicly established the exact cause of the crash, and investigations were continuing.
The tragedy has once again thrown attention on road safety along one of Accra’s busiest highways as families await further information about the victims.
