A routine construction job in Belgium turned into an astonishing treasure discovery after workers uncovered a massive stash of gold estimated to be worth more than $10 million while carrying out sewer work at a former brewery property.
The remarkable discovery happened in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, Belgium, where a building was undergoing renovation. Workers were digging as part of the installation of a new sewer system when they came across gold hidden inside the cellar area.
Among those at the site was an 18-year-old student worker named Kobe, who reportedly initially thought some of the objects were ordinary coins. But the crew soon realized they had stumbled upon something far more valuable: a collection of gold coins, nuggets and bullion bars estimated at roughly €9 million, or more than $10 million.
Rather than attempting to quietly walk away with the extraordinary find, the workers reported the discovery to authorities and the organization connected to the property. Police subsequently secured the site as questions immediately emerged over who originally owned the fortune and how long it had been hidden there.
The property has historical links to brewing, and investigators are now working to determine the origin of the gold and whether it could be connected to former owners. Authorities are also expected to establish whether any of the treasure is linked to criminal activity before ownership can ultimately be decided.

Belgian rules could make the ownership battle particularly interesting. Reports indicate potential rightful owners may have years to come forward, meaning the workers who uncovered the treasure are not automatically entitled to walk away with millions.
Still, for a crew expecting another ordinary day of digging and laying sewage pipes, finding millions of dollars in hidden gold beneath an old property is the kind of discovery most people only imagine in movies.
