End of an Era? Cristiano Ronaldo Hints He Could Retire at End of 2026-27 Season

Football may be preparing for one of its biggest goodbyes as Cristiano Ronaldo has strongly hinted that the 2026-27 season could be the final campaign of his extraordinary professional career.

The 41-year-old Portuguese superstar, currently with Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr, opened up about his future in a recent interview, admitting that this will “probably” be his last year in football.

Ronaldo has not issued a formal retirement announcement or confirmed an exact date, but his latest comments are his clearest indication yet that the end may finally be approaching.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains under contract with Al Nassr until the summer of 2027, meaning retirement at the conclusion of the current season would bring the curtain down on a professional career stretching back more than two decades.

Ronaldo said he wants to leave football with a “spectacular legacy” after years of sacrifice at the highest level. He also revealed that he has already begun thinking about life away from the pitch, including spending more time traveling, enjoying family life and playing padel.

One major target could still stand between Ronaldo and retirement — the historic 1,000 career goals milestone.

The Portuguese icon currently sits on 976 goals for club and country, leaving him within touching distance of a record that once appeared almost impossible.

Ronaldo’s career has taken him from Sporting CP to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and eventually Al Nassr. Along the way, he collected five Champions League titles, league championships in England, Spain and Italy, five Ballon d’Or awards and countless individual records.

He also confirmed that the 2026 World Cup was his final appearance at the tournament, further fueling speculation that his playing days are entering their closing chapter.

For millions of supporters around the world, the possibility of Ronaldo retiring will mark the end of a football generation.

Nothing is officially final yet, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Cristiano Ronaldo appears to be preparing for the final lap of one of football’s greatest-ever careers.
