Firefighters responding to a serious accident on the Accra–Kumasi Highway made an unexpected discovery after recovering thousands of cedis and U.S. dollars from the crash scene.

The accident occurred at Suhum Niifio on Sunday, August 16, 2026, and involved a Ford F-150 pickup and a Kia Rio. One male occupant of the Kia reportedly became trapped inside the vehicle following the collision.

A six-member team from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, led by STNO II Darkwah Prince, rushed to the scene at about 8:03 p.m. Firefighters used specialized extrication equipment to free the trapped victim before he was transported to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.

But after the rescue operation, firefighters reportedly discovered a significant amount of money and other valuables among the wreckage.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service information cited in local reports, personnel recovered approximately GH¢50,000 and US$5,231.81 from the accident scene. Mobile phones, power banks, National ID cards and other personal belongings were also salvaged.

The valuables were reportedly secured following the crash, drawing praise online for the firefighters involved in the operation.

Preliminary information indicates that the Ford F-150 was attempting to overtake when it collided with the rear of the Kia Rio. The impact caused extensive damage to the pickup and partial damage to the Kia. Fortunately, no deaths were recorded in the accident.

The Ghana National Fire Service has reportedly attributed the crash to wrongful overtaking and used the incident to remind drivers about the dangers of risky maneuvers on major highways.

Beyond the dramatic cash discovery, the incident has once again highlighted the important role firefighters play at accident scenes—not only rescuing trapped victims, but also helping protect property and valuables recovered from damaged vehicles.

Authorities continue to urge motorists traveling along the busy Accra–Kumasi Highway to obey traffic regulations, avoid dangerous overtaking and prioritize safety at all times.
