The escalating political battle between Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and GoldBod Chief Executive Sammy Gyamfi has taken a dramatic legal turn, with the Effutu MP filing lawsuits over allegations that portrayed him as an extortionist.
Afenyo-Markin announced in Parliament on Monday, August 24, 2026, that he had formally taken the matter to court, insisting that he wants the judiciary to determine the truth behind the controversial claims.
According to the Minority Leader, one suit has been filed at the Accra High Court against Sammy Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, while a separate action has been initiated at the Achimota Circuit Court against Eric Adjei and Peace FM.
The legal action follows a heated public exchange surrounding concerns raised by Afenyo-Markin about losses connected to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and the role of the Ghana Gold Board.
Gyamfi had publicly described Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist” amid the dispute and challenged him to seek legal redress if he believed the accusation was false.
Afenyo-Markin has strongly rejected the allegation, maintaining that his questions about GoldBod and public funds form part of his constitutional responsibility as Minority Leader.
Addressing lawmakers, he said he had decided to submit the dispute to the legal process and expressed confidence that the courts would eventually determine the matter.
He also declared that he is prepared to cooperate with any investigation by the Ghana Police Service, Office of the Special Prosecutor or other lawful investigative bodies if complaints are officially lodged against him.
The dispute has already attracted the attention of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, which announced that it would assess petitions concerning the extortion allegations to determine whether further investigation falls within its mandate.
With lawsuits now officially filed, the political war of words has moved from television studios, social media and Parliament into the courtroom.
For Sammy Gyamfi, Afenyo-Markin and the media organizations named in the cases, the next stage could be a closely watched legal showdown over reputation, accountability and some of the most explosive allegations in Ghana’s current political debate.
The allegations against Afenyo-Markin remain claims and have not been proven by a court.
