Tensions between the United States and Iran have exploded once again after American forces struck Iranian rocket launchers near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, amid U.S. claims that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was preparing rockets and sea mines for possible deployment.
The strikes were carried out on Sunday, August 30, 2026, against two launchers on Iran’s Larak Island, according to a U.S. official. The operation marked the first known American military strike against Iranian forces since late July, ending several weeks of relative calm in the months-long conflict.
U.S. officials said the targeted launchers were being prepared by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and were associated with potential rocket attacks and efforts to place additional sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
The narrow waterway remains one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes and has become a major flashpoint in the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
Iranian authorities acknowledged that the attack caused casualties. The Revolutionary Guards said both Iranian personnel and civilians were killed or injured, although an exact casualty figure was not immediately released. Tehran has vowed to retaliate.
The latest military action comes just days after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy claimed it maintained “full control” of the Strait of Hormuz, challenging U.S. assertions about security and freedom of navigation through the waterway.
The United States has previously carried out operations aimed at removing Iranian sea mines from the strait and protecting maritime traffic. In April, U.S. Central Command announced that American forces had begun clearing mines from the strategic passage.
Sunday’s attack has heightened fears that the confrontation could enter another dangerous phase, particularly if Iran follows through on its promise of retaliation.
Any major disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have global consequences, potentially affecting oil supplies and energy prices far beyond the Middle East.
