Former Ghanaian boxing star Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has regained his freedom after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued the death threat case brought against him.
The dramatic development unfolded on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when Ayitey Powers returned before the court after spending about a week on remand over an alleged threat against National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Following his appearance, the court discontinued the proceedings, clearing the way for the former professional boxer to be released from custody. The specific circumstances that prompted the discontinuation were not immediately made public.
Ayitey Powers’ legal troubles began after a video circulated widely on social media in which he was accused of making threatening comments directed at the NSA boss.
The Accra Regional Police Command arrested him on August 24, 2026, as authorities opened investigations into the alleged statements. The arrest also followed calls from the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee for the matter to be investigated.
He was subsequently brought before the Dansoman Circuit Court and charged with threat of death. Ayitey Powers pleaded not guilty to the charge before being remanded for one week and ordered to return to court on September 2.
The case attracted considerable attention within Ghana’s sporting community because of Ayitey Powers’ long association with boxing and the position held by Ampofo Ankrah at the National Sports Authority.
Fellow boxer Bukom Banku had also publicly appealed for leniency following Powers’ arrest, while acknowledging the seriousness of the alleged comments.
Wednesday’s decision, however, brought the court proceedings to an abrupt end and allowed Ayitey Powers to walk free after days in custody.
For the former boxer and his supporters, the development represents a major turnaround after a week dominated by headlines surrounding his arrest, remand and possible legal consequences.
