Mexico’s entertainment industry has been plunged into mourning following the shocking killing of Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist, composer and founding member of indie rock band Camilo Séptimo, alongside members of his family inside their home.

The 38-year-old musician, his pregnant wife Ana Paula, their 3-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old woman who worked in their home were found shot dead inside an apartment in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, on September 1. The family’s pet dog was also killed.

Amid the horrifying scene, authorities discovered the couple’s 6-year-old son alive and apparently unharmed, making him the sole surviving member of the immediate family present during the attack. Officials have not publicly explained why the child was spared.

Authorities said some of the victims had been restrained before they were shot, highlighting the disturbing nature of the attack. Police were called to the upscale residential complex after reports of trouble at the property, and investigators later launched an intensive search for those responsible.

Two suspects have since been arrested in connection with the multiple killings. Prosecutors said one of those detained was an associate of Meléndez and may have used his relationship with the musician to gain access to the residence. Investigators are examining robbery among the possible motives, although the investigation remains ongoing.

Meléndez was widely known as “Honas” and helped establish Camilo Séptimo, a popular Mexican band recognized for blending indie rock, synthpop and electronic sounds.

Following confirmation of his death, Camilo Séptimo paid tribute to their longtime bandmate, remembering his music, life and contribution to the group.

The brutal killings have generated widespread shock across Mexico, while attention now turns to the investigation and the welfare of the surviving 6-year-old boy.
