Legendary American feminist, journalist and activist Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential voices in the global women’s rights movement, has died at the age of 92.
Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City on September 2, 2026, surrounded by people close to her, according to a statement from her foundation. A cause of death was not immediately announced.
Her death marks the end of an extraordinary life dedicated to challenging inequality and pushing for greater opportunities and freedoms for women.
Steinem rose to national prominence during the 1960s and became one of the most recognizable leaders of America’s second-wave feminist movement. Her journalism, speeches and activism helped bring issues such as workplace discrimination, reproductive rights and gender inequality into mainstream political and cultural conversations.
In 1963, she gained widespread attention after going undercover as a Playboy Bunny and later writing about the working conditions women faced. She subsequently became a co-founder of Ms. magazine, which developed into an influential platform for feminist journalism and advocacy.
Steinem also helped establish organizations including the National Women’s Political Caucus and the Women’s Media Center, while spending decades campaigning for civil rights, political participation and equal treatment for women.
Her contributions earned her numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by President Barack Obama in 2013.
Even in her later years, Steinem remained engaged in the fight for equality. Her foundation said she continued working toward that mission until the end of her life.
News of her passing has prompted tributes from political leaders, activists and admirers around the world, including longtime friend Hillary Clinton, who praised Steinem’s enormous influence on generations of women.
Gloria Steinem may be gone, but the movement she helped transform and the generations she inspired ensure her voice will continue to echo for years to come.
