The sensational Lindsay Clancy murder trial has reached a stunning breaking point after a Massachusetts judge moved to declare a mistrial when jurors failed for a third time to reach a unanimous verdict over the deaths of her three young children.
Judge William Sullivan announced Friday, September 4, that the jury remained hopelessly deadlocked after seven days and roughly 38 hours of deliberations. The judge temporarily stayed the mistrial ruling for an hour, however, allowing Clancy’s defense team to seek emergency intervention from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
At the center of the courtroom drama is reportedly one male juror.
The jury appeared to be split 11-1, with Clancy’s attorney Kevin Reddington arguing that a lone holdout was preventing the panel from reaching a verdict favorable to his client. The jury foreperson previously informed the judge that one juror had acknowledged having doubt but allegedly refused to apply the court’s instructions concerning reasonable doubt.
Reddington repeatedly pushed for the juror to be removed or questioned further, but Judge Sullivan declined, explaining that each juror had affirmed an ability to follow the law.
The unusual deadlock is especially striking because Clancy has never denied killing her children.
The 36-year-old former nurse admitted strangling Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, inside the family’s Duxbury home in January 2023. The real question before jurors was whether she should be held criminally responsible for those killings.
Her defense maintains that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and therefore could not legally be held responsible for her actions.
Prosecutors strongly disagree, arguing that Clancy deliberately planned the killings, understood what she was doing and knew her actions were wrong.
After days of tense deliberations, jurors returned Friday with another devastating message: they simply could not reach unanimity.
That impasse has now pushed one of America’s most closely watched murder trials toward a mistrial and potentially another trial with an entirely new jury.
For Lindsay Clancy, the legal battle may be far from over.
