From humble beginnings in Ghana to operating in the heart of Beverly Hills, California, Dr. Michael K. Obeng has built an extraordinary career that has placed him among the prominent names in American plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The Ghanaian-American physician is a Harvard-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Today, he leads MiKO Plastic Surgery and MiKO Surgery Center in Beverly Hills, one of America’s most exclusive and expensive communities and a location internationally associated with luxury, entertainment and high-end cosmetic medicine.
But Obeng’s story extends far beyond cosmetic procedures and the glamour associated with Beverly Hills.
His expertise covers both aesthetic and complicated reconstructive surgery, with training that includes micro-neurovascular techniques. His practice lists procedures ranging from body contouring and breast surgery to complex reconstructive cases, while his professional career has earned him the nickname “The Surgeon’s Surgeon.”
Perhaps the most powerful part of Obeng’s legacy is how he has used his medical knowledge to help people who could never afford the type of surgery available at his Beverly Hills practice.
In 2008, he founded RESTORE Worldwide, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free reconstructive surgery to children and adults affected by congenital conditions, accidents, burns, tumors and other disfiguring conditions. The organization says it has provided more than 1,900 free surgeries across three continents, with the procedures valued at more than $95 million.
Ghana has remained an important part of that humanitarian mission. RESTORE has repeatedly returned to the country with teams of medical professionals to provide free surgeries while also working with local healthcare professionals. In 2024, the organization announced another Ghana mission aimed at providing reconstructive procedures for more than 100 patients at Agogo Presbyterian Hospital.
Obeng also captured worldwide attention in 2021 when he helped Tessica Brown, whose hair had become stuck after she used Gorilla Glue. He developed a procedure to remove the adhesive and treated her in California, bringing international attention to his problem-solving abilities.
