Saudi Arabia has temporarily shut down its crucial East-West oil pipeline after multiple attacks struck sections of the strategic energy route, raising fresh concerns over global oil supplies amid growing tensions across the Middle East.
The Saudi Ministry of Energy confirmed on Friday, September 11, that the pipeline was targeted in the Riyadh and Madinah regions on Thursday morning. Authorities said the system was stopped as a precautionary measure while emergency and technical teams moved in to secure the affected areas and determine the extent of the damage.
The attacks reportedly left several people injured, although Saudi officials have not disclosed the exact number or severity of their injuries. Those affected received medical treatment.
The East-West Pipeline is one of Saudi Arabia’s most important pieces of energy infrastructure. It carries crude oil from the Kingdom’s oil-producing eastern region across the country to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, providing Saudi Arabia with an alternative export route that bypasses the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz.
The shutdown is particularly significant at a time when regional instability has already placed pressure on major oil transportation routes. Any prolonged disruption to the pipeline could further complicate Saudi Arabia’s ability to move crude to international markets and potentially put additional pressure on global energy prices.
Saudi authorities have not officially identified those responsible for the latest attacks. The Energy Ministry said specialized teams were immediately deployed to secure the infrastructure and conduct safety assessments in accordance with emergency procedures.
Officials have also not announced when the pipeline will resume operations, saying further developments will be released as more information becomes available.
The latest incident once again highlights the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure as geopolitical tensions intensify across the region. With Saudi Arabia playing a major role in the global petroleum market, developments surrounding the East-West Pipeline are expected to be closely watched by governments, traders and energy markets worldwide.
