Nigeria’s entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of legendary Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs, one of the most respected and influential figures in African cinema.

The veteran actor, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. His family confirmed the heartbreaking news through a statement shared on social media.

Jacobs’ son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the passing of his father while describing him as the family’s beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The family also referred to the celebrated actor as the “Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to members of the public, bloggers and social media personalities to respect their privacy as they mourn.

Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built an extraordinary career that stretched across several decades and crossed international borders.

Before becoming a household name in Nollywood, Jacobs trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He later appeared in British television, theatre productions and international films before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the defining faces of the country’s movie industry.

His commanding voice, powerful screen presence and ability to portray kings, fathers, traditional leaders and other authoritative characters earned him admiration from generations of movie lovers.

Jacobs received several major honors during his career. He won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and was honored with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011 for his contribution to the arts.

Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs also contributed to developing future performers through the Lufodo Group and its performing arts academy.

His death closes an unforgettable chapter in Nigerian cinema, but the performances, mentorship and legacy Olu Jacobs leaves behind will continue to influence Nollywood for generations.
