Street gangs have shaped parts of America’s urban history for decades, influencing everything from neighborhood rivalries and drug markets to violent crime and popular culture. While there is no single official federal ranking of U.S. cities by total gang membership, several major cities have repeatedly drawn attention from local and federal authorities because of longstanding or significant gang activity.
Here are five American cities widely associated with major street-gang networks.
1. Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles is arguably America’s most internationally recognized gang city. The area is historically linked to organizations such as the Crips, Bloods, 18th Street and MS-13. The Justice Department describes the Crips as having originated in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, while federal prosecutors continue to bring major cases involving 18th Street and MS-13 members in the region.
2. Chicago, Illinois
Chicago has one of the deepest gang histories in the United States. Groups including the Gangster Disciples, Black Disciples, Vice Lords and Latin Kings have operated there for generations. Historic Justice Department assessments have documented tens of thousands of gang members in Chicago, although those estimates should not be treated as current 2026 totals.
3. Houston, Texas
Houston has also become a major focus of federal anti-gang operations. In February 2026, prosecutors announced charges against 20 alleged members and associates of the Houston-based Free Money gang, accusing the organization of crimes including racketeering, murder, attempted murder, robberies and drug trafficking.
4. New York City, New York
America’s largest city has numerous neighborhood-based gangs and crews. Federal authorities have recently prosecuted organizations including different sets of the Trinitarios and other Bronx-based street gangs. In July 2026, federal prosecutors charged alleged BB7 Trinitarios members in a racketeering case involving five murders and other violent crimes.
5. Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis has received increased federal attention over organized violent crime and gang activity. The Justice Department expanded its Violent Crime Initiative to Memphis in 2023, deploying prosecutors, investigators and analysts to focus on violent offenders and gang-related crime.
A Complex American Problem
Gang activity does not define these cities or the millions of law-abiding people who live in them. But decades of law-enforcement investigations show that organized street gangs remain a serious challenge in certain neighborhoods. From Los Angeles’ historic gang networks to newer federal crackdowns in Houston and Memphis, authorities continue battling organizations connected to shootings, narcotics trafficking and other violent crimes.
