NFL Takes Rare Action, Suspends Jeff Seeman and Adrian Hill After Heated Player Incidents

Email 16

The NFL has taken the unusual step of suspending two game officials following separate confrontations with players during Sunday’s Week 4 action.

Line judge Jeff Seeman has been suspended for two games, while referee Adrian Hill will serve a one-game suspension after the league determined that both were involved in instances of unprofessional conduct toward players. The penalties were issued by NFL Vice President of Officiating Ramon George.

Seeman’s incident came during the Arizona Cardinals’ matchup against the New York Giants.

Video from the game appeared to show Seeman directing profanity toward Cardinals tight end Trey McBride after McBride questioned officials over a potential penalty that was not called late in the fourth quarter.

The exchange quickly spread across social media and drew criticism from NFL Players Association Executive Director JC Tretter, who argued that officials should face the same accountability expected of players when inappropriate behavior occurs.

Hill’s suspension resulted from a separate incident during the Minnesota Vikings’ game against the Miami Dolphins.

Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson accidentally collided with Hill after being blocked into the official by Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II on a play that had been stopped. Hill appeared visibly angry afterward and was seen shouting at Wilson and directing him back toward his team’s huddle.

Wilson later described the situation as less serious than it may have appeared and said Hill accepted his apology after the collision.

Still, the NFL decided both incidents crossed the line of professional conduct expected from its officiating crews.

Suspensions involving NFL officials are relatively uncommon, making the league’s decision particularly notable. Most officiating discipline is handled internally and does not always result in publicly announced game suspensions.

The decision has sparked debate among football fans over referee accountability and whether officials should face consequences similar to players and coaches when emotions boil over.

For Seeman and Hill, Sunday’s heated moments will now come with an immediate cost: time away from the field.
