France School Protest Crisis: Thousands Detained as Student Demonstrations Sweep the Nation

Email 18

France is facing one of its most serious waves of student unrest in years as school protests spread across the country, leading to thousands of arrests and violent confrontations between demonstrators and police.

More than 250,000 people reportedly joined demonstrations nationwide on Tuesday, October 6, as students, teachers and parents demanded increased education funding, improved school facilities and more staff.

The movement began in September, particularly in disadvantaged areas around Paris, before quickly expanding to cities and communities across France. Students have complained about overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, deteriorating buildings, long school days and concerns about their future educational opportunities.

Authorities say more than 6,100 people have been arrested since the protests began, with many of those detained being minors. Earlier Justice Ministry figures showed that more than 5,000 people had been taken into police custody, including approximately 4,400 minors.

Demonstrations have included school blockades, class boycotts and large street marches. However, some protests have descended into clashes, with fires, projectiles and property damage reported in several areas.

Riot police have responded with tear gas and other crowd-control tactics. The escalating confrontations have resulted in hundreds of injuries. Reuters reported that at least 215 teenagers, 85 school staff members and more than 700 police officers have been injured during the unrest.

Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the level of force being used against young protesters, while authorities insist police are responding to increasingly dangerous incidents.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s government has promised to examine students’ complaints and develop proposals addressing teacher shortages, deteriorating schools and other educational concerns.

Despite those promises, the protests show little sign of disappearing.

With thousands already detained and demonstrations spreading nationwide, France’s school funding dispute has transformed from a student movement into a major national crisis putting growing pressure on the government to find a solution before tensions escalate further.
