Popular American streamer IShowSpeed has added another major achievement to his fast-rising career after joining a Ghana-focused documentary backed by former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The internet personality, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., has joined the production team of “The Eyes of Ghana,” a documentary exploring an important chapter of Ghana’s independence history. Barack and Michelle Obama are involved through their production company, Higher Ground, while IShowSpeed has come on board as a producer.
The 90-minute documentary is directed by two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ben Proudfoot and focuses on veteran Ghanaian cinematographer Rev. Dr. Chris Tsui Hesse, who served as a cameraman to Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Hesse spent decades preserving more than 1,000 reels of historic film footage documenting Ghana’s journey to independence and wider African liberation movements during the 1950s and 1960s. The documentary follows efforts to protect that priceless archive and ensure the history captured on film is preserved for future generations.

IShowSpeed revealed that his visit to Ghana earlier in 2026 played a major role in his decision to become involved. The streamer said the country felt like home to him and that he wanted to help introduce Hesse’s remarkable legacy to his massive global audience.
His involvement could give the documentary significant exposure among younger viewers, particularly considering his enormous international following across YouTube and other social platforms.
“The Eyes of Ghana” previously premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. It is now scheduled for a special one-night theatrical screening across the United States and Canada on October 28, 2026.
The collaboration brings together one of the world’s biggest online personalities, an award-winning filmmaker and the Obamas’ production company in a powerful effort to bring Ghana’s independence story and historic film archive to a wider global audience.
