A late-night street confrontation turned into a terrifying exchange of gunfire in the nation’s capital after a suspected gunman opened fire on National Guard troops attempting to break up a fight, leaving a soldier and the alleged shooter wounded.
The violent encounter unfolded around 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2026, near the 400 block of Eighth Street Southeast, in Washington’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, not far from the U.S. Capitol.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, approximately seven or eight National Guard members were inside a vehicle when they noticed a confrontation developing among individuals on the sidewalk.
The troops reportedly stepped out to intervene and prevent the altercation from escalating, but the situation quickly took a dangerous turn.
Suspect Opens Fire on National Guard Troops
Washington, D.C., Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll revealed that one of the individuals involved in the confrontation allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting.
The National Guard members immediately ordered the armed individual to drop his weapon.
However, authorities said the suspect ignored their commands and pointed the firearm toward the troops, prompting three Guard members to return fire.
During the exchange, one National Guard member suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, while the suspected shooter was struck in the abdomen.
Both injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment.
Fortunately, police confirmed that their injuries were not considered life-threatening and that both were expected to survive.
Suspect Arrested as Police Launch Investigation
Authorities confirmed that the suspected gunman was placed under arrest following the confrontation.
Investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Internal Affairs Division have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police are also working to determine what triggered the original street fight and whether additional individuals were involved.
Chief Carroll assured residents that there was no continuing threat to the surrounding community.
National Guard Deployment Back in Spotlight
The shooting comes amid the continued presence of National Guard personnel in Washington, D.C., following President Donald Trump’s deployment of troops to the capital in August 2025 as part of a broader crime-fighting initiative.
The deployment has generated considerable debate over public safety, federal authority and the role of military personnel in civilian communities.
Sunday night’s incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by troops operating in public spaces.
Although both wounded individuals are expected to recover, the shocking confrontation underscores how quickly an ordinary street dispute can escalate into a potentially deadly encounter.
Investigations remain ongoing as authorities seek additional information about the confrontation and the events that led to the exchange of gunfire.
