Veteran international journalist and CNN chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour has announced that she will leave the American news network in June 2027, bringing an extraordinary 43-year association with one of the world’s leading news organizations to an end.
The 68-year-old broadcasting icon confirmed her decision on Monday, October 19, 2026, following months of personal reflection about her future.
Amanpour, widely respected for her fearless reporting from some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones, described her relationship with CNN as an unforgettable professional journey.
“After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!” she announced.
Christiane Amanpour Prepares to Say Goodbye
Under her departure arrangements, Amanpour will gradually reduce her television responsibilities before officially leaving CNN next summer.
Her popular CNN International interview program, Amanpour, will transition to a weekly format in January 2027 before concluding in May.
Meanwhile, her PBS program, Amanpour & Company, will end in December 2026.
Despite stepping away from the network, Amanpour emphasized that she is not retiring from journalism.
She intends to continue her podcast, The Ex Files, and explore other professional opportunities.
From CNN Assistant to Global Journalism Icon
Amanpour joined CNN in 1983 as an entry-level assistant on the international assignment desk.
Through determination, exceptional reporting and a passion for international affairs, she eventually became one of the most recognizable journalists in global television.
Her distinguished career has taken her to major conflict zones, including Iraq, Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran.
Her coverage of the Gulf War and other international crises helped establish CNN’s reputation for extensive global news reporting.
Over four decades, Amanpour interviewed world leaders, investigated humanitarian crises and provided audiences with firsthand accounts of major international developments.
CNN Boss Reacts to Her Departure
CNN chairman and chief executive Mark Thompson expressed sadness over Amanpour’s decision while acknowledging her extraordinary contributions to journalism.
Thompson disclosed that discussions surrounding her departure had continued for several months.
He described her as an internationally respected journalist whose career helped define CNN’s identity.
The announcement also comes during significant changes at CNN following its transition to new ownership under Skydance.
However, Amanpour has not publicly attributed her departure to those corporate developments.
A Legacy That Will Live Beyond CNN
As she prepares for her final months at the network, Amanpour has encouraged journalists to remain committed to independent reporting and factual accuracy.
Her departure will undoubtedly mark a significant turning point for CNN and international broadcast journalism.
After 43 remarkable years of telling the world’s biggest stories, Christiane Amanpour is preparing to close one historic chapter while leaving the door open for another.
