Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come under renewed financial scrutiny after Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams disclosed that the Ministry spent approximately $1.26 million on 2,922 match tickets.

Adams revealed the figures while appearing before Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee on Thursday, September 17, as lawmakers examined expenditure connected to Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

According to the Minister, the tickets were secured for the Black Stars’ three group-stage matches against Panama, England and Croatia.

The Ministry obtained 948 tickets for Ghana’s match against Panama, 1,000 for the England fixture and 974 for the Croatia encounter, bringing the total to 2,922.

Adams explained that the tickets were not purchased for commercial resale. He said the final prices included a 10% administrative charge permitted by FIFA on top of the tickets’ face values.

For example, Category One tickets for the Panama game carried a face value of $450 but cost $495 after the additional charge. Category One tickets for the England match rose from $600 to $660, while similar tickets for the Croatia game increased from $500 to $550.

The tickets were intended for various groups, including Ghanaian supporters, members of the diaspora, Ghana’s High Commissions in the United States and Canada, the Ghana Students Association, government delegates and selected Ghana Football Association officials.

Adams further explained that visa difficulties forced officials to revise the original distribution arrangement, resulting in more tickets being made available to Ghanaians already living abroad.

The disclosure gives Parliament and the public a clearer picture of one portion of the spending associated with Ghana’s 2026 World Cup participation as scrutiny continues over the financial commitments surrounding the Black Stars’ campaign.
