Ghana has been plunged into mourning following the death of Abdul-Samed Sulemana, widely known as Awuche and celebrated as the country’s tallest man.
The 33-year-old reportedly passed away during the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving specialised medical care after his health deteriorated due to complications associated with gigantism.
Awuche, who stood approximately 7 feet 4 inches tall, became a nationally recognised figure because of his extraordinary height. However, beyond the physical stature that attracted attention wherever he went, many remembered him for his warm smile, humility and determination in the face of serious health challenges.
A native of Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, Awuche initially received treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu before being transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for advanced care.
His medical struggles recently captured nationwide attention after appeals were made to help finance his treatment. Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama subsequently offered to cover his hospital expenses and support any additional specialist care that might be required.
That intervention brought renewed hope to Awuche, his family and the many Ghanaians following his condition. Doctors later determined that his left leg would not require amputation, contrary to earlier concerns raised before his reassessment in Tamale. Sadly, the hope surrounding his recovery has now been replaced by grief.
Awuche’s remarkable story extended far beyond his height. He represented resilience, courage and the daily realities faced by people living with rare medical conditions. His journey also sparked important conversations about access to specialised healthcare and financial support for vulnerable patients.
Burial arrangements were reportedly being made in Tamale in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Ghana may have lost its tallest man, but Awuche’s towering presence, unforgettable smile and inspiring strength will remain in the hearts of many.
