A major political shake-up has hit Ghana’s Parliament as Builsa North Member of Parliament James Agalga has been named the new Majority Leader, replacing Mahama Ayariga following President John Dramani Mahama’s latest ministerial reshuffle.
The leadership change was confirmed on Friday, August 7, 2026, after Ayariga was nominated as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs-designate. His move into the Executive created the need for a new figure to take charge of the Majority side in Parliament.
Agalga, an experienced National Democratic Congress lawmaker and former Deputy Minister for the Interior, will now assume one of the most powerful parliamentary positions, placing him at the center of government business in the House.
His elevation comes at a politically crucial moment, with Parliament expected to consider several ministerial nominees announced by President Mahama.
Among the latest changes, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has been nominated as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, while Kenneth Gilbert Adjei has been moved from Works and Housing to the Defence Ministry. Ahmed Ibrahim has also been reassigned to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
The nominations were formally sent to Parliament through Speaker Alban Bagbin in accordance with Article 78(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. The ministerial nominees will still have to go through parliamentary vetting and approval before taking up their new roles.
For Mahama Ayariga, the reshuffle signals a dramatic transition from managing government business on the floor of Parliament to potentially heading one of the country’s key ministries.
For James Agalga, however, the spotlight has suddenly become much brighter.
As Majority Leader, he will be expected to coordinate the governing caucus, steer government business through Parliament and play a central role in negotiations with the Minority.
The sudden leadership switch adds another layer to President Mahama’s sweeping government changes and sets the stage for a fresh political battle inside Parliament as Agalga begins his new assignment.
