Former “American Idol” contestant and Ohio music pastor Caleb Flynn has been convicted of murdering his wife, bringing a closely watched trial filled with disturbing text messages, allegations of an affair and claims of a staged home invasion to a dramatic conclusion.
An Ohio jury found Flynn, 40, guilty on Tuesday, September 29, in connection with the February 16, 2026, death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, a 37-year-old teacher and volleyball coach. He was convicted on charges including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
Prosecutors told jurors that Flynn shot Ashley twice in the head while she was sleeping inside their Tipp City home before attempting to make the scene appear as though an intruder had broken into the house.
Flynn had maintained that he was in another room when he heard gunshots and claimed an unknown burglar was responsible. Investigators, however, testified that evidence surrounding the door and digital activity inside the home did not support his account of a forced entry. The murder weapon was never recovered.
A major part of the prosecution’s case centered on Flynn’s affair with Alleigha Botner, a woman he met through his church. Jurors heard about thousands of messages exchanged between the pair, including messages prosecutors said showed Flynn repeatedly expressing his desire for his wife to be gone.

Evidence presented at trial also showed that Flynn sent Botner messages shortly before Ashley’s killing that prosecutors argued demonstrated his intentions. His defense maintained that the messages and his infidelity did not prove that he committed murder.
Flynn became emotional as the guilty verdicts were read in court, eventually lowering his head and crying after the jury left the courtroom.
His case has attracted additional attention because Flynn appeared on Season 12 of “American Idol” in 2013, where he previously credited Ashley with encouraging him to pursue his musical dreams.
Flynn is scheduled to be sentenced on October 5 and faces the possibility of life in prison without parole. His attorneys have indicated they plan to appeal.
