The United States criminal case involving Ghanaian social media personality Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, has entered a crucial new phase after a federal court authorised his defence team to examine sealed investigative evidence.
The order from the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio allows Abu Trica’s lawyers—and approved individuals assisting them—to review confidential materials gathered during the investigation. However, the information must be handled under strict protective conditions and cannot be freely shared with the public.
Access to the documents gives the defence an opportunity to examine the prosecution’s evidence, prepare legal arguments and identify material that could be challenged when the case reaches court.
The development comes ahead of a pre-trial conference scheduled for August 25, 2026, and a jury trial expected to begin on September 8, 2026. Abu Trica has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracy.
US prosecutors allege that Abu Trica and other members of an international network used online dating platforms, social media and artificial-intelligence technology to create false identities and build relationships with elderly victims.
According to the prosecution, more than 80 victims were allegedly deprived of over $8 million. Authorities claim that money obtained through the alleged scheme was moved through different accounts and associates in the United States, Ghana and other locations.
Abu Trica was arrested in Ghana in December 2025 before being extradited to the United States on July 9, 2026. The US Department of Justice says he could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, although any sentence would ultimately be determined by the court.
The release of the sealed evidence does not establish guilt. Instead, it forms part of the discovery process intended to ensure that the defence understands the case being presented by prosecutors.
With the September trial approaching, attention will now turn to how Abu Trica’s legal team responds to the evidence and whether the case proceeds to a full jury trial or takes another direction during the pre-trial stage.
Abu Trica remains presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
