Ghanaian businessman and social media personality Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, appears ready for a prolonged legal fight after securing a new team of attorneys ahead of a crucial court proceeding in the United States.

The latest development comes as Abu Trica battles federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He has pleaded not guilty, and the allegations against him remain unproven unless prosecutors establish their case in court.

Reports on Sunday, August 23, confirmed that Abu Trica had obtained new legal representation, marking a significant change in his defence strategy as the high-profile case enters another critical stage.

His case was formally declared “complex” by U.S. District Judge John R. Adams on July 30 after the defence requested additional time to examine what has been described as extensive evidence and complicated financial records. Prosecutors did not oppose the request.

The designation effectively gives Abu Trica’s lawyers more time to prepare their defence instead of forcing the case through the usual federal speedy-trial timetable.

While August 25 has widely been discussed online as a “trial date,” court records show that it is actually a pretrial scheduling conference. The court is expected to establish a revised timetable for future proceedings at that hearing. The jury trial had originally been scheduled for September 8, but that date could now change because of the complex-case designation.

Abu Trica was extradited from Ghana to the United States in July 2026 after American prosecutors accused him and alleged associates of participating in an international romance-fraud operation that allegedly targeted more than 80 victims and caused losses exceeding $8 million.

The decision to bring in new attorneys just days before key court proceedings has now attracted major attention among followers of the case.

For Abu Trica, the battle is far from over.

With a fresh legal team now assembled and additional preparation time secured, all eyes will be on the U.S. federal courtroom as his defence prepares for what could become a lengthy and fiercely contested legal showdown.
