A dramatic narcotics interception at the Accra International Airport has led to the arrest of a delivery driver as Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) intensifies investigations into a suspected cocaine trafficking operation.
According to reports, NACOC intercepted a significant quantity of a substance suspected to be cocaine at the airport on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. Initial information indicates that a courier delivery driver is at the centre of the investigation and has been taken into custody.
The development has raised questions about how the suspicious consignment reached the airport and whether other individuals may have been involved in coordinating its movement.
Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni reported on Joy News that authorities suspect the arrested driver may have been working with other individuals positioned higher within a possible drug trafficking network. Investigators are therefore expected to question the suspect as they work to identify everyone potentially connected to the consignment.
NACOC has not yet publicly disclosed the exact quantity of the suspected cocaine or its estimated street value. Authorities are also expected to subject the seized substance to the required testing procedures to officially establish its composition.
The latest interception comes as Ghanaian security agencies continue strengthening efforts to prevent the country’s airports and other entry points from being used as transit routes for international narcotics trafficking. NACOC has recently announced additional drug-detection measures at the Accra International Airport, including new scanning equipment intended to improve the identification of suspicious consignments and passengers.
Investigations into the latest case remain ongoing, and authorities are expected to release additional information as they attempt to determine the origin, intended destination and individuals behind the suspected cocaine shipment.
The arrested driver remains a suspect, and the allegations against him have not yet been proven in court.
