Ghana’s vibrant capital, Accra, has earned major international recognition after being ranked 18th among the world’s 20 best cities for nightlife in 2026, according to a new global ranking by Time Out.

The achievement puts Accra alongside some of the biggest entertainment destinations on the planet, including Bangkok, Berlin, New York City, Melbourne, Amsterdam, Madrid and Seoul.

Time Out compiled the ranking after surveying more than 24,000 people worldwide about nightlife in their respective cities. Factors including quality, affordability and a sense of community were considered, alongside input from the publication’s international network of local editors and cultural experts.

Accra’s famous after-dark culture helped secure its place among the global elite. From the bustling streets and entertainment venues of Osu to the increasingly sophisticated nightlife scene of East Legon, the Ghanaian capital offers everything from live music and bars to clubs, alternative parties and upscale social spaces.

According to the survey, 62 percent of Accra residents considered nightlife affordable, while affordability ratings for both live music and drinks reached 67 percent. Accra scored particularly strongly for its welcoming atmosphere, with 75 percent saying it was easy to find a sense of community and 65 percent describing the city as welcoming and friendly.

The 2026 ranking was topped by Bangkok, Thailand, followed by Berlin, Germany, and New York City in the United States. Johannesburg placed seventh and emerged as the highest-ranked African city, while Accra was the second African city to make the top 20.

Accra finished ahead of Singapore, which placed 19th, and Mexico City, which completed the list in 20th position.

For Ghana, the recognition could provide another boost to Accra’s growing reputation as a tourism, entertainment and cultural destination, particularly as the city continues attracting international visitors during major festive periods.

With its infectious music, energetic crowds, diverse entertainment venues and famous Ghanaian hospitality, Accra has officially secured its place on the global nightlife map and the world is taking notice.
