Afenyo-Markin Strikes Back! Minority Leader Files Fresh Lawsuits Against Sammy Gyamfi and Eric Adjei Over Explosive Extortion Allegations

Ghana’s political and legal landscape has witnessed another dramatic development as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin launches fresh defamation lawsuits against two prominent National Democratic Congress (NDC) figures, Sammy Gyamfi and Eric Adjei, following controversial extortion allegations against him.

The latest legal action, filed at the Accra High Court, signals the Effutu Member of Parliament’s determination to defend his reputation despite setbacks in his earlier lawsuits.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, by his lawyer, F. Paa Kwesi Abaidoo, the renewed lawsuit against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi was filed on October 15, 2026, under suit number GJ/0045/2027.

The decision follows an earlier High Court ruling that invalidated Afenyo-Markin’s original defamation action because the writ failed to satisfy certain procedural requirements.

Although his lawyers disagreed with that ruling, they maintained that the latest filing complies with the court’s interpretation of the law.

The controversy originated from a heated political exchange concerning GoldBod’s operations and alleged financial losses under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Afenyo-Markin had raised concerns about the programme, prompting a response from Sammy Gyamfi that included accusations of extortion, which the Minority Leader strongly rejected.

In another surprising development, Afenyo-Markin also initiated fresh proceedings against National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) Chief Executive Officer Eric Adjei.

The new lawsuit, numbered GJ/0061/2027, was filed on October 20, shortly after an earlier case against Adjei was withdrawn from the Achimota Circuit Court.

The fresh action centres on statements Adjei allegedly made during a radio discussion on Peace FM.

Although the withdrawal initially suggested that both parties might settle their differences outside court, Afenyo-Markin’s legal team clarified that the decision did not mean abandoning the dispute.

Adjei’s lawyer, Gideon Koku Abotsi, previously indicated that discussions between the parties followed judicial encouragement to explore an amicable settlement.

However, the fresh lawsuits have revived the legal confrontation and intensified attention on the political dispute.

The Minority Leader’s legal team insists that the matter must be determined through the judicial process.

With the controversy returning to the courtroom, attention will now turn to how both defendants respond to the renewed legal challenges.

The central question remains whether Afenyo-Markin can successfully establish that the disputed statements damaged his reputation.

For now, the allegations remain contested, and the courts have yet to determine the merits of the fresh defamation claims.
