Two American cities were rocked by devastating mass shootings overnight after separate bursts of gunfire in Trenton, New Jersey, and Chicago, Illinois, left at least three people dead and 23 others wounded.

The shootings unfolded just minutes apart late Saturday and early Sunday, August 30, 2026, leaving investigators scrambling to determine what triggered the deadly violence.

In Trenton, police responded to the area of 194 Locust Street at approximately 12:25 a.m. after receiving reports of multiple gunshots.

Authorities confirmed that 11 people were struck by gunfire. Two victims died, while nine others were transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora described the shooting as a devastating act of violence and said law enforcement agencies were working together as the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force investigates the incident.

Hundreds of miles away in Chicago, another horrifying scene unfolded at Washington Park on the city’s South Side.

Police said officers were attempting to disperse a gathering near Cottage Grove Avenue at about 11:37 p.m. Central Time when unidentified individuals suddenly began firing into the crowd.

Updated figures from CBS Chicago indicate that one man was killed and 14 other people were wounded. Several additional victims were discovered after the initial police count, raising the number of people injured in the Chicago attack.

The man who died was identified only as a 35-year-old who suffered multiple gunshot wounds before being transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as people ran for safety when the gunfire erupted during the gathering. Police later reported that a person had been detained and a weapon recovered, although authorities had not announced charges as of the latest update.

When adjusted for the cities’ different time zones, the two shootings occurred roughly 12 minutes apart, making the violence even more chilling.

Authorities in both cities continue searching for answers as families and communities deal with the aftermath.

The combined toll from the two shootings now stands at three dead and 23 wounded, according to the latest reported figures.
