America’s criminal underworld has produced some of the most infamous figures in history. From Prohibition-era bootlegging empires to powerful Mafia families, certain gangsters became household names because of their wealth, violence, influence and ability to avoid law enforcement for years.

1. Al Capone
Few names are more closely associated with organized crime than Al Capone. Based in Chicago during the Prohibition era, Capone built a criminal empire involving illegal alcohol, gambling and other rackets.
Nicknamed “Scarface,” Capone became enormously wealthy and powerful. Despite being linked to brutal gang warfare, authorities eventually brought him down through tax-evasion charges. He was convicted in 1931 and later served time at Alcatraz.
2. Charles “Lucky” Luciano
Lucky Luciano is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the development of modern American organized crime.
Operating primarily in New York, Luciano helped restructure the Italian-American Mafia and played a major role in creating a system that allowed powerful crime families to cooperate while reducing internal warfare.
His influence extended far beyond the streets, making him one of the most important crime bosses of the 20th century.
3. John Gotti
Known as the “Dapper Don,” John Gotti became one of America’s most recognizable Mafia bosses during the 1980s.
Gotti rose to control New York’s Gambino crime family and attracted enormous media attention because of his expensive suits, outspoken personality and repeated courtroom victories.
After several failed prosecutions, federal authorities finally convicted him in 1992 on racketeering and murder-related charges. He received a life sentence.
4. Bugsy Siegel
Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was a notorious gangster whose name became closely connected with the early development of Las Vegas.
Siegel had ties to organized crime networks in New York and California before becoming involved in Nevada casino ventures, including the Flamingo.
His glamorous lifestyle and underworld connections made him one of the most famous mob figures of his era. Siegel was murdered in Beverly Hills in 1947.
5. Frank Costello
Often called the “Prime Minister of the Underworld,” Frank Costello became famous for his political connections and influence within organized crime.
Unlike many gangsters known mainly for public violence, Costello developed a reputation for building relationships with politicians, businessmen and powerful figures.
His ability to combine criminal operations with political influence made him one of the most powerful Mafia figures in American history.
