The defending champions secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over England in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15, booking their place in the final against Spain. Anthony Gordon gave England the lead before late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez completed Argentina’s remarkable turnaround.
However, attention quickly shifted away from the result after Argentine players were pictured displaying a banner carrying the message, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” meaning “The Falklands are Argentine,” during their post-match celebrations.
The banner referred to the long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina. Its appearance immediately triggered criticism in Britain and renewed political tensions between the two countries.
The British government has backed calls for FIFA to investigate the incident, arguing that political messages should have no place in football celebrations. FIFA regulations restrict teams and players from displaying political slogans or banners during official competitions.
Argentina could now face a fine or another disciplinary measure, although FIFA had not announced a final decision at the time of publication. Reports indicate that previous violations involving political banners have resulted in financial penalties.
