The baseball world is mourning the loss of Tommy John, the legendary Major League Baseball pitcher whose name became permanently connected to one of the most important medical procedures in sports. John died at the age of 83 at his home in Florida on Saturday night, according to his agent, Mike Maguire. He had recently been receiving hospice care.
His death comes just days after an emotional farewell message was shared with baseball fans during the New York Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day. In the message, John expressed gratitude to the people who supported him throughout his remarkable journey.
Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, John enjoyed an extraordinary 26-season MLB career from 1963 to 1989, pitching for Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels and Oakland Athletics. He finished his career with a 288-231 record, 3.34 ERA and 2,245 strikeouts, while earning four All-Star selections.
But his influence on baseball stretched far beyond his accomplishments on the mound.
In 1974, John suffered a severe injury to the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. Facing what could have been the end of his career, he underwent an experimental reconstruction procedure performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Frank Jobe.
The surgery worked.
John returned to Major League Baseball in 1976 and incredibly continued pitching for another 14 seasons. The procedure eventually became known worldwide as “Tommy John surgery,” transforming the treatment of serious elbow injuries and helping countless pitchers extend careers that once might have been considered finished.
Remarkably, John recorded 164 victories after undergoing the operation, compared with 124 before it, a stunning testament to both his resilience and the groundbreaking medical procedure.
Despite his impressive statistics and historic impact on baseball, John was never inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
He had previously revealed a battle with bladder cancer and had entered hospice care before his death, although an official cause of death had not been publicly confirmed at the time of reporting.
Tommy John leaves behind more than wins, strikeouts and unforgettable baseball memories. His willingness to take a chance on an experimental surgery changed sports medicine forever.
