The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a major change to the Black Stars’ technical team, appointing former Ghana international Godwin Attram as assistant coach in place of Desmond Ofei.

The appointment, confirmed on Monday, September 21, 2026, comes as Ghana prepares to begin its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign under head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Attram’s arrival marks a new chapter in his coaching career, offering the former Black Stars midfielder an opportunity to contribute to the senior national team’s preparations for upcoming international assignments.

Desmond Ofei Takes Charge of Black Meteors

Desmond Ofei will now concentrate exclusively on his responsibilities as head coach of Ghana’s Under-23 national team, the Black Meteors.

The decision forms part of the GFA’s restructuring programme, which seeks to give coaches clearly defined responsibilities across the country’s national teams.

Ofei previously combined his Black Stars assistant coaching duties with roles involving the Black Satellites and, more recently, the Black Meteors. His immediate focus will now shift to preparing the U-23 side for the next Olympic Games qualifying campaign.

Godwin Attram Brings International Experience

Attram is no stranger to Ghanaian football, having represented the Black Stars during his playing career.

The former midfielder played for European clubs, including PSV Eindhoven and Silkeborg IF, before moving into coaching.

He previously managed Accra Great Olympics and worked within Ghana’s national youth football setup, gaining experience in player development.

His appointment reunites him with Carlos Queiroz, whom he publicly backed during Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Black Stars Prepare for Crucial AFCON Qualifiers

Attram joins the technical team as Ghana prepares for its opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24.

The Black Stars will subsequently face The Gambia before taking on Morocco in an international friendly.

The coaching changes come at an important moment for Ghana’s senior national team as Queiroz and his technical staff work toward securing qualification for the 2027 continental tournament.
