A frightening scene unfolded near Windsor Forest High School in Savannah, Georgia, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, after gunfire erupted close to the campus, triggering a precautionary lockdown and a major police response.
Savannah Police said the shooting happened around 2:46 p.m. near Largo Drive and Windsor Road, close to the high school and Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus. Investigators said an altercation involving two groups occurred before one person was shot.
The victim, identified by Savannah Alderman Kurtis Purtee as a 19-year-old male, was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
The nearby Windsor Forest High School was immediately placed under lockdown as authorities worked to secure the area. Most students had already been dismissed for the day, but individuals remaining on campus for after-school activities were brought inside as a safety precaution. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 4 p.m.
The shooting did not take place inside the school, according to reports. However, its proximity to the campus prompted Savannah-Chatham County Public School System officials and Board of Education Police to assist responding officers.
Georgia Southern University also issued a temporary shelter-in-place warning as police searched the surrounding area. Authorities focused part of their investigation around the Joseph Landings Apartment Complex while officers worked to locate people believed to have been involved.
The response brought together several law enforcement agencies, including Savannah Police, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol and Savannah-Chatham school police.
Although the Windsor Forest lockdown has now been lifted, the shooting remains under investigation.
The incident comes as school communities across Georgia remain particularly sensitive to reports of gun violence, making Tuesday’s sudden lockdown another alarming reminder of how quickly violence near a campus can disrupt students, families and staff.
Authorities have urged people to avoid the immediate area while investigators continue working to determine exactly what led to the shooting.
