Chelsea have officially announced the signing of experienced England midfielder Jordan Henderson, completing one of the most unexpected transfers of the summer window.
The 36-year-old has signed a two-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2028. He joins the Blues following his departure from fellow London club Brentford, where his contract was ended by mutual agreement.
Henderson said Chelsea’s size, ambitious ownership and the opportunity to work with manager Xabi Alonso convinced him to accept the move. The veteran midfielder also promised to give everything on and off the pitch while helping the players around him improve.
His arrival adds valuable leadership and Premier League experience to a Chelsea squad filled with young talent. Henderson previously spent 12 years at Liverpool, where he developed into one of English football’s most respected captains.
After taking over the Liverpool captaincy from Steven Gerrard in 2015, Henderson led the Reds through a highly successful period. He lifted the Champions League in 2019 before helping Liverpool win their first English league title in 30 years during the following season.
He also won the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, Community Shield and FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Anfield. Henderson later played for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq and Dutch giants Ajax before returning to the Premier League with Brentford.
The midfielder has earned 91 senior appearances for England and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up at Euro 2020. His international experience could prove valuable inside the Chelsea dressing room as the club attempts to compete for major trophies.
Henderson becomes another experienced English player recruited by Chelsea following the arrival of former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck.
The move may divide supporters because of Henderson’s strong Liverpool history, but Chelsea believe his winning mentality, discipline and leadership can help guide their younger stars.
