Deadline-Day Bombshell: Folarin Balogun’s £40m Everton Transfer Collapses at the Final Hour

Email 8

Everton’s hopes of landing United States international striker Folarin Balogun have ended in dramatic fashion after his proposed move from AS Monaco collapsed in the final moments of the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old forward had travelled to Merseyside on deadline day with expectations that he would complete a reported £40 million transfer to Everton. Balogun arrived for the necessary formalities, including his medical, as the Toffees raced against time to strengthen their attacking department.

However, what appeared to be one of Everton’s biggest deadline-day signings quickly turned into a transfer nightmare.

Reports indicated that an issue emerged during Balogun’s medical examination, creating uncertainty around the deal. Everton and Monaco continued working on the transfer, with the Premier League club even submitting a deal sheet that gave them additional time beyond the normal deadline to complete the necessary paperwork.

But the dramatic negotiations ultimately produced no agreement.

According to Sky Sports, Balogun eventually had a change of heart, bringing the proposed move to Goodison Park to a stunning end after midnight. The collapse means the former Arsenal striker will remain with Monaco rather than making his anticipated return to English football.

The failed transfer represents a major blow for Everton, who had been determined to reinforce their frontline before the window shut. The club had already allowed striker Beto to leave for Fiorentina, increasing the importance of bringing another recognised goalscorer into David Moyes’ squad.

Balogun appeared to fit the profile Everton were searching for. His pace, movement and experience in Ligue 1, together with his previous spells in English football, made him an attractive option for the Toffees.

Instead, Everton supporters were left stunned by one of the biggest twists of deadline day.

For Balogun, the attention will now return to Monaco as he looks to put the transfer drama behind him and focus on the remainder of the 2026/27 season.

What looked only hours earlier like a blockbuster Premier League return ended with Balogun staying in France and Everton empty-handed in their late pursuit of a striker.
