END OF AN ERA: Todd Boehly Exits Chelsea as Clearlake Capital Takes Full Control of Blues

Email 20

Todd Boehly’s time at Chelsea has come to an end, with the American businessman leaving his position as chairman and selling his ownership interest as Clearlake Capital moves to take full control of the Premier League giants.

Chelsea officially announced the major ownership transition, confirming that Clearlake will acquire Boehly’s stake as well as the ownership interest held by fellow investor Mark Walter. Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss will remain part of the ownership group.

The development closes an important chapter at Stamford Bridge after Boehly became one of the most recognizable faces of Chelsea’s post-Roman Abramovich era.

Boehly joined forces with Clearlake, Walter and Wyss to acquire Chelsea in 2022. The takeover deal involved £2.5 billion for the club’s shares, alongside commitments for significant additional investment in Stamford Bridge, the academy, women’s team and other areas.

During the ownership period, Chelsea poured huge sums into rebuilding the playing squad and restructuring the club’s football operations. Boehly initially took a highly visible role, serving as chairman and temporarily overseeing sporting matters before gradually stepping back from day-to-day football decisions.

Now, Clearlake is preparing to become Chelsea’s controlling force without Boehly.

The club said the ownership change will not result in changes to Chelsea’s day-to-day operations, leadership or current strategy. Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano said their focus remains on investing in infrastructure, sporting performance and player development.

Reports indicate Boehly and Walter’s combined interests are being sold in a transaction worth around £950 million, with Chelsea valued at approximately £5 billion including debt.

Boehly described serving as Chelsea chairman as an “honour” and expressed confidence that the London club is positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.

For Chelsea supporters, the announcement represents another dramatic change behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge.

Four years after helping lead the takeover that transformed Chelsea’s ownership structure, Todd Boehly is walking away, leaving Clearlake Capital firmly in control of the Blues’ next chapter.
