From a humble Ghanaian background to becoming one of Africa’s most recognizable digital storytellers, Wode Maya’s journey is a remarkable story of persistence, travel, technology and wealth creation through social media.
Born Berthold Kobby Winkler Ackon, the Ghanaian content creator studied aeronautical engineering at Shenyang Aerospace University in China. It was during his years in China that he began building the online identity that would eventually transform his life. His early videos documented the experiences of Africans living abroad, including encounters with racism and cultural differences.
Over time, Wode Maya shifted much of his attention toward Africa. Armed with a camera and an ambitious vision, he began travelling across the continent, highlighting entrepreneurs, communities, tourist destinations, businesses and inspirational Africans.
His mission has largely centered on challenging negative stereotypes about Africa and presenting stories of opportunity, development and culture that he believes receive insufficient international attention. His “Africa to the World” project reflects that broader goal.
Millions of Followers and Serious Money
By September 2026, third-party channel tracking data listed Wode Maya at around 2 million YouTube subscribers and more than 317 million channel views, placing him among Ghana and Africa’s most prominent individual travel creators.
But his growing fortune is not simply about subscriber numbers.
In a January 2026 interview with Bola Ray, Wode Maya revealed that his social-media income can reach extraordinary levels. He said there are months when he makes about $100,000, while indicating that roughly $50,000 can sometimes be assured monthly. He identified YouTube and Facebook among his major income-producing platforms.
That disclosure offers a clearer picture of his earning power than many unverified online “net worth” estimates. There is currently no independently verified public figure establishing Wode Maya’s total personal net worth, so claims placing his fortune at specific multimillion-dollar amounts should be treated cautiously.
Interestingly, Wode Maya says he does not accept every lucrative brand opportunity. He has explained that maintaining authenticity and creative control is important to him, even when sponsorship deals could generate additional money.
His success has also come with difficulties. Wode Maya revealed in 2026 that he had previously been deported from countries including Zambia and Uganda while travelling and filming, yet continued pursuing his mission.
Today, Wode Maya represents something much bigger than a successful YouTube channel.
His journey demonstrates how a Ghanaian creator armed with a camera, internet access and a distinct African-focused vision turned digital storytelling into a global career and potentially one of the most lucrative personal media brands to emerge from Ghana.
Note: Wode Maya is frequently described as one of Africa’s biggest YouTubers, although “biggest” varies depending on whether the measurement is subscribers, views, earnings or influence. A 2025 GhanaFact analysis, for example, found other Ghanaian channels ahead of him on some public YouTube metrics.
