More than six years after George Floyd’s death sparked worldwide protests, a dispute has emerged within his family over millions of dollars donated in his name.
Three of Floyd’s siblings are demanding a detailed financial accounting of the George Floyd Memorial Fund, a GoFundMe campaign established following his death in Minneapolis in May 2020.
According to a September 22, 2026, TMZ report, Floyd’s sisters, Zsazsa and LaTonya, and his brother Rodney have formally requested financial records from their brother Philonise Floyd, who organized the fundraiser.
The siblings, through a Houston-based attorney, sent Philonise a letter dated August 11 seeking information about approximately $19 million reportedly collected through the campaign.
They claim they have not received any money from the fundraiser despite believing they are entitled to a share of the donations as members of Floyd’s family.
The relatives are requesting complete GoFundMe reports, transaction histories, financial statements, tax filings and documents explaining how the donations were managed and distributed.
Their attorney reportedly gave Philonise 20 days from receipt of the letter to provide the requested information, expressing hope that the disagreement could be resolved amicably.
The siblings also told TMZ that they had approached civil rights attorney Ben Crump for information but had not received a response.
The fundraiser was launched in 2020 to cover funeral expenses, counseling, travel related to court proceedings and other family needs. Philonise previously stated that part of the money would support Floyd’s children and their education.
The family’s demand for financial transparency does not establish that donations were stolen or misused. The reported $19 million figure comes from the relatives’ letter, and a complete public accounting of the funds has not been independently verified.
As of the September 22 report, Philonise had not provided a publicly reported response to the relatives’ latest demands.
The dispute has brought renewed attention to the handling of donations raised in George Floyd’s memory, with his relatives’ seeking answers about how the money was distributed and who ultimately benefited from the fundraising campaign.
