Ghana’s gospel music fraternity has been hit with heartbreaking news following the passing of veteran gospel singer and songwriter Bernice Offei, one of the country’s respected voices in Christian music.

News of Offei’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief among gospel music lovers and admirers who grew up listening to her inspirational songs.

The award-winning musician built a remarkable career spanning several decades, becoming widely known for songs including “Hold On,” “Life Is So Short,” “Kaase Gbeyi,” “N’adom Ara Kwa” and “Nyame Aye Bi Ama Yen.” Her catalogue includes several albums that helped establish her as an important figure in Ghana’s gospel music industry.

Offei was not only celebrated for her singing but also for her songwriting ability. At the 2009 Ghana Music Awards, she won Best Female Vocal Performance and Songwriter of the Year, highlighting the impact of her music and vocal talent.

Her passing comes shortly after a worrying episode earlier in September when she was reported missing in Accra. The 63-year-old singer was last seen around the Agbogba area on September 1, prompting family members, fellow gospel musicians and fans to appeal publicly for assistance.

Relief later swept across the country when her family confirmed that she had been found safe.

Now, news of her death has brought renewed sadness to fans who had celebrated her safe return only days earlier.

Beyond music, Offei was also known for her professional career in banking before dedicating herself more fully to ministry and music. Her songs frequently carried messages of faith, perseverance, gratitude and hope.
