Ghanaian authorities have intensified investigations into alleged drug trafficking through the country’s ports, with 10 people, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), currently being held as the probe continues.

The development emerged after President John Dramani Mahama met security chiefs on Thursday, September 17, 2026, for a briefing on investigations into the movement of illicit drugs through Ghana’s ports.

According to a government statement, the four Customs officers are among 10 individuals being held while investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the suspected trafficking activities.

Authorities have not released the identities of those in custody or provided specific allegations against each person. The Presidency also did not announce that formal charges had been filed, meaning the investigation remains ongoing.

The latest development has placed renewed attention on security systems at Ghana’s ports and the measures used to detect and prevent illegal narcotics from entering or leaving the country.

During the security meeting, officials reportedly reviewed existing anti-trafficking structures and discussed additional steps that could strengthen border and port controls.

President Mahama also directed the establishment of an inter-agency task force to prepare a comprehensive roadmap aimed at preventing drug trafficking through Ghana’s borders. The task force is expected to submit its proposals within two weeks.

The investigation comes amid heightened concern over attempts to move large quantities of prohibited drugs through Ghana’s ports. Earlier in 2026, authorities also investigated public officers following the interception of a massive undeclared tramadol shipment at Tema Port.

For now, authorities say investigations into the latest case are continuing as officials seek to determine the full extent of the suspected trafficking operation.
