A school field trip in Iowa has ended in heartbreaking tragedy after a 10-year-old fifth-grade student and his teacher were found dead in a reservoir, leaving families, classmates and an entire school community devastated.

The victims have been identified as Ahmed Osman, 10, of Iowa City, and Hannah Jorgensen, 24, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary School.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, during an outdoor educational trip to the Macbride Nature Recreation Area near Lake Macbride State Park in Johnson County, Iowa.

Teacher Found Dead as Search for Missing Student Intensifies

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were dispatched to the area at approximately 12:10 p.m. after receiving reports of people in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway.

Rescue teams recovered Jorgensen from the reservoir at approximately 12:43 p.m., but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities subsequently launched an extensive search for Ahmed, who remained missing following the incident.

The search continued for several hours before emergency crews suspended their operations Tuesday evening.

Rescuers returned the following day, Wednesday, September 23, and recovered the young boy’s body from the reservoir at approximately 1:24 p.m.

School Community Devastated by Double Tragedy

The Iowa City Community School District confirmed that both victims were participating in a fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip, an outdoor education programme designed to provide students with practical learning experiences in nature.

In a statement, the district expressed profound sadness over the deaths, describing Ahmed and Jorgensen as valued members of the school community.

School officials extended their condolences to the victims’ families, friends, colleagues and classmates.

Counselors and additional support personnel have been made available at Borlaug Elementary School to assist students and staff struggling with the devastating loss.

The district has also suspended School of the Wild field trips for the foreseeable future.

Investigation Underway Into Fatal Incident

The circumstances surrounding how the student and his teacher entered the water remain unclear.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the incident to establish exactly what happened during the educational outing.

Authorities have not released a detailed account of the events leading up to the deaths.
