A heartbreaking video circulating online has brought renewed attention to the tragic death of Mercy Yaaba Bredu, the brilliant University of Education, Winneba graduate who died shortly after travelling to China to pursue a master’s degree.
The footage reportedly captures moments after Mercy collapsed following her arrival in China, with people seen attending to her as efforts were made to get her medical assistance.
Mercy, 24, left Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026, after securing a scholarship to further her education in China. What was expected to be the beginning of an exciting academic journey, however, ended in tragedy just two days later.
According to accounts from her former university colleagues, Mercy reportedly complained of discomfort during her journey before collapsing shortly after arriving at the airport in China. She was subsequently rushed to a hospital, where medical personnel attempted to stabilise her condition. She sadly passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Mercy graduated from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) with first-class honours and previously served as Vice President of the Association of Students of English. Reports indicate that she had received opportunities to pursue further studies abroad before eventually choosing China for her postgraduate education.

The emergence of the emotional video has sparked fresh grief online, with many people mourning a young woman whose promising academic journey was cut tragically short.
Her family has since appealed to the Government of Ghana and relevant authorities for assistance in bringing her remains back home for burial. Relatives said Mercy appeared healthy when they accompanied her to the airport before her departure.
The exact medical cause of her death has not been publicly confirmed.
