Captain Smit Machchhar is being celebrated internationally after his actions during a terrifying mid-air emergency helped save the lives of passengers and crew aboard a flydubai flight.

Machchhar was commanding flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, when authorities say his co-pilot attacked him inside the cockpit. According to Reuters, Machchhar was seriously injured during the confrontation as the aircraft suddenly descended nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds.

Despite being wounded, the experienced Indian pilot continued fighting to prevent the situation from becoming a catastrophe.

Machchhar later recalled that while he was on the cockpit floor, his 17 years of flying experience helped him realize the aircraft was rapidly losing altitude. He gathered enough strength to reach the cockpit door and unlock it, allowing others onboard to come to his aid.

Passengers and crew members were then able to overpower the alleged attacker. Two other flydubai pilots who were traveling onboard subsequently helped bring the aircraft under control and safely divert it to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Reuters reported that all 174 passengers escaped unharmed.

From Mumbai to an Extraordinary Aviation Story

Machchhar, originally from Mumbai, has spent years building an extensive aviation career. Before joining flydubai as a captain in 2022, he worked for SpiceJet for roughly 11 years and held senior flying and training positions. His professional profile lists thousands of hours flying Boeing 737 aircraft.

After the incident, Machchhar underwent surgery and was reported to be in stable condition while recovering from his injuries.

His actions have attracted praise from leaders in India and Israel. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Machchhar while he was recovering, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised his actions during the crisis.

The co-pilot was arrested by Saudi authorities, while investigators continue working to determine the motive behind the alleged attack.

For the passengers aboard Flight FZ1073, what began as a normal international journey suddenly became a fight for survival and Captain Smit Machchhar’s determination while seriously injured helped give everyone onboard a chance to make it home alive.
