Hollywood and the Deaf community have been plunged into mourning following the death of rising actress Kaylee Hottle at the age of 18.

Hottle, widely recognised for portraying Jia in the blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong franchise, died after a car accident in Frederick County, Maryland. Her father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed the devastating news in an emotional Facebook livestream delivered in American Sign Language.

According to reports citing local authorities, the young actress was travelling as a passenger in a vehicle that left the road and struck a culvert. She was taken to a trauma centre but later pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation, with excessive speed believed to have contributed to the crash.

Hottle captured international attention with her powerful performance as Jia, a Deaf orphan who develops a special bond with Kong through sign language, in the 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong. She returned to the role in the 2024 sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, earning praise for her emotional delivery and commanding screen presence.

Born into a multigenerational Deaf family, Hottle was fluent in American Sign Language and became an inspiring symbol of authentic representation in mainstream cinema. Her success demonstrated the importance of casting Deaf performers in roles that accurately reflect their language and culture.

Before her breakthrough in Hollywood, she appeared in advertisements and advocacy projects supporting the Deaf community. Her performance in the second MonsterVerse movie also earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Younger Performer.

The Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle studied, released a statement mourning her passing and offering support to students and staff affected by the tragedy. Fans have also filled social media with tributes celebrating her talent, kindness and impact on screen.

Kaylee Hottle’s life and promising career were cut painfully short, but her groundbreaking contribution to Deaf representation in Hollywood will not be forgotten.
