Hollywood is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Hayden Panettiere, the actress whose unforgettable performances in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise made her a familiar face to millions around the world.

Panettiere has died at the age of 36, with her family confirming the devastating news through her representative. She died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina.

According to police, emergency responders found the actress unresponsive at an apartment shortly before 2 p.m. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

A cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed. Preliminary information cited by reports indicates that investigators found no apparent signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

Panettiere began acting as a child before achieving worldwide recognition as Claire Bennet, the seemingly indestructible cheerleader in NBC’s hit television series Heroes. She later won praise for portraying troubled country music star Juliette Barnes in Nashville, a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

Her movie career included appearances in Remember the Titans, Scream 4 and Scream VI, while her voice and video-game work further expanded a career that stretched across more than three decades.

Away from the screen, Panettiere had publicly discussed some of the difficult chapters of her life, including struggles with addiction and postpartum depression. Earlier in 2026, she released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, reflecting on her life, career and personal battles.

She is survived by her daughter, Kaya. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023.

At only 36, Hayden Panettiere leaves behind a career that began in childhood and touched television, film, music and millions of fans.

For many who grew up watching her, the news is difficult to process: a star who had been on screen for most of her life is gone far too soon.
