Ghana international Inaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional end to his four-year journey with the Black Stars.
The 32-year-old Athletic Bilbao forward confirmed his decision on Friday, September 11, saying the time had come to close a memorable chapter of his career after representing the country of his parents’ heritage.
Williams’ final appearance for Ghana came during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32. Ghana’s run to the knockout stage was their first at a World Cup since 2010.
Born in Bilbao, Spain, to Ghanaian parents, Williams initially represented Spain and made one senior friendly appearance before switching his international allegiance to Ghana in 2022. He made his Black Stars debut later that year and went on to represent Ghana at both the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, as well as the Africa Cup of Nations.
During his Black Stars career, Williams earned 28 international caps and scored two goals, while becoming one of the most recognizable members of Ghana’s attacking unit.
In his farewell message, Williams reflected on the pride of wearing Ghana’s colors and the opportunity international football gave him to reconnect more deeply with his roots. He expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, supporters and everyone who accompanied him during his journey with the national team.
Although his time on the pitch for Ghana has officially ended, Williams made it clear that his connection with the country remains strong and that he will continue supporting the Black Stars from outside the squad.
His retirement closes a significant chapter for Ghana as the national team begins looking toward a new generation of attacking players.
For Williams, however, the Black Stars jersey will remain part of his story long after his final international whistle.
